"The Tories kicked off what's expected to be a petty and bitter provincial election campaign by filing a complaint with Elections Manitoba over a stray government ad.
The ad, touting the goodies in the NDP's recently released budget, ran Saturday morning on CTV. By law, the government is supposed to pull all non-essential ads once the campaign period begins.
"This wasteful spending we've seen over the last number of months just continues on into the campaign," Tory MLA and campaign co-chair Kelvin Goertzen said Saturday.
But government staff said an order was sent Friday to all media outlets -- including the Winnipeg Free Press -- at about 4:15 p.m. asking them to pull all government ads, including job postings. The News Media Services office issued the order even before Premier Gary Doer formally called the election, fearing any delay would make it impossible to catch all the ads in time. "
