Now that the election is over, Manitoba's political parties need to do a little navel gazing.

Does post-secondary education trump public safety?
Buckdog is going to continue with a mix of opinions from various bloggers on issues relevant to Manitobans as they fight the 2007 Election.
Today from Right of Centre Ice is a post from Dylan on the issues of post-secondary education and public safety. While Dylan has a bit of a PC bent, I find him a fairly progressive 'red' tory.

NDP Offers Caregiver $1,020 Tax Credit
On Sunday, Premier Gary Doer pledged that if you take care of an aging parent or disabled family member, you'll get a tax credit.
The new tax credit would be modeled after a similar break offered by the Quebec government. The $1,020 tax credit would go to Manitobans who care for family members at home instead of calling in a home care worker or placing the family member into a nursing home.

Green Candidate Uses Bike As Campaign Headquarters
Story from The BrandonSun Online:
Green Party of Manitoba candidate James Beddome hopes to turn pedal power into political power as he cycles his way along the campaign trail in the rural constituency of Minnedosa.
"This is the campaign headquarters right here", he said yesterday as he showed off his bicycle and attached trailer, which carries the tent he plans to live out of for the next 12 days.
Beddome is a long-shot at best to win the seat, but he believes he has a genuine chance against the candidates from the more established political parties.

NDP Would Hire 100 New Doctors For Manitoba
Manitoba will have 100 more doctors within four years if the NDP is re-elected, Premier Gary Doer said Monday.
He made the pledge while unveilling a $5.36 million physician recruitment plan to train more doctors, provide funding to help relieve overworked physicians in rural and northern Manitoba, and establish a pool of cash for moving and relocation costs when doctors are recruited to work in Manitoba.

First Day Of Campaign Has 'Green' Theme
The first full day of campaigning in the Manitoba election had 'Earth Day' as a backdrop. As a result, all parties were out in force at Earth Day activities around the province.
In perhaps the biggest announcement of the young campaign so far, NDP Leader Gary Doer has committed to making Kyoto emission targets provincial law by 2012. Environmentalist David Suzuki called the initiative a positive step, noting it goes past political promises by pledging to become a law.
In separate statements, Liberal Leader Jon Gerrard and Conservative Leader Hugh McFadyen blasted the NDP government's environmental record.

Tories Kick Off 'Petty And Bitter Campaign'
"The Tories kicked off what's expected to be a petty and bitter provincial election campaign by filing a complaint with Elections Manitoba over a stray government ad.
The ad, touting the goodies in the NDP's recently released budget, ran Saturday morning on CTV. By law, the government is supposed to pull all non-essential ads once the campaign period begins.
"This wasteful spending we've seen over the last number of months just continues on into the campaign," Tory MLA and campaign co-chair Kelvin Goertzen said Saturday.
But government staff said an order was sent Friday to all media outlets -- including the Winnipeg Free Press -- at about 4:15 p.m. asking them to pull all government ads, including job postings. The News Media Services office issued the order even before Premier Gary Doer formally called the election, fearing any delay would make it impossible to catch all the ads in time. "
